House & Garden Magazine Feature

Hello friends, as promised, here's the picture of our beautiful lanterns and organza featured in Australian House & Garden Magazine (November 2011 issue).

Lanterns: 35cm flower lantern, 30cm deluxe pink lantern, 20cm white lantern, 12.5cm white lantern, hung with our organza ribbon (available in decoration section of website). These lanterns have become even more popular since the magazine feature, but don't worry, as we still have plenty in stock, and more coming in the next container (due end of November). These lanterns have been used in high tea parties, birthday parties, weddings and for home decoration!

I'm currently in Hong Kong at the huge trade fair, and have found even more lovely items which will start arriving in the first shipment for 2012!!!

I've picked up some samples in China of the items about to be loaded into the container, which I'll photograph and add to facebook next week when I'm back!!

I've just gotten back from China - here is the message I was unable to post from Beijing - better late than never!!

Hello friends, and greetings from China. I’m having a great experience and am happy to report that this visit I have also made time for being a tourist - as you can see I’m here at the Great Wall!

I’ve also been working very hard - and have now finalised the next shipment! Production is underway, and the container is due to arrive in Brisbane mid-July! So here’s a sneak peak of whats coming …..

Parasols - We are increasing the range of colours in the nylon parasol range - black, cream/ivory, purple and orange have been added! As we have had many requests for a smaller size nylon parasol, these are coming too in the cream/ivory!

I love cherry blossom everything!! Over the years I have sourced some stunning items for my customers (and myself) in this design! I have even named myself after this stunning flower in my Chinese name - Ying Hua 樱花, and after many hours of practice, I can write it too! :-)

Usually I share pictures with you all of lanterns featured in parties or weddings, but today I thought I'd show you another way to decorate with lanterns.

So soft and pretty, these white paper lanterns perfectly fill the corner space in this little girls bedroom!

You too can get this look with the white irregular ribbed paper lanterns shown in the picture, or you could use regular round paper lanterns. I think it also would look nice with the silk lanterns in a white or powder pink too!

What a week it has been in my town of Brisbane! I'm sure you have all seen the devastating pictures on the TV - so heartbreaking. Also, sadly it seems other parts of Australia are now flooding too :-(

But, I can say I feel so proud of the efforts of the thousands of volunteers, and the positive and enthusiastic way the cleanup has begun in Brisbane. It has really restored my faith in humanity, and I am feeling a very proud Australian!

I am very thankful that my home has not been damaged, and my business is still operating.

Hello Friends!
I can't believe its Xmas already ..... where has the time gone!
We are still working frantically sending orders out in time for New Years Eve, Australia Day and Chinese New Year. It seems all this rain hasn't affected your party plans!! :-)

Hello friends!

Behind the scenes we have been frantically busy .......

We are working on a new and improved version of our Lanternshop website, so this means taking all new photos!!!

On the new website, there will be a beautiful picture of every silk lantern by size/shape/colour! A lot of hard work .... but the end result will be well worth-it.

I'm putting a few pics here as a preview on the blog - 45cm olive shape Vietnamese Silk lanterns in Olive Blue, Magenta and caramel!

Doesn't this look great! The Vietnamese Silk lanterns in caramel, champagne and orange are perfect for this promotional display for Sex and the City 2!
I wish they had used my lanterns in the movie - I would have gladly delivered them in person!

I loved the series and recently saw this second movie movie - it was ok, but I think the first was better.

PAPER LANTERNS - DECORATING ON A BUDGET

Paper lanterns are the solution you have been searching for!

Wanting to change the look and feel of a room without blowing the budget? This is a challenge faced by us all at some point in our lives, but one we can now easily overcome! Here is the solution for the most simple and effective way to add some colour, texture and excitement to your living spaces – paper lanterns!

Starting at just $1.85 per lantern, this is an inexpensive, do-it-yourself solution that can completely transform the biggest or smallest of rooms in minutes. All you need is a step-ladder, some fishing line, thumbtacks or hooks, and of course, some lanterns.

As an Interior Decorator and Colour Consultant, I find the biggest obstacle most people come across is indecision and fear - not knowing where to begin or how to make the right colour choices, so I’ve put together a few helpful tips to get you started:

Are you wanting to create a particular mood or vibe in the space? Here’s a list of the most popular colours, and the ‘feelings’ they evoke. This is really helpful for choosing paint colours or general decorating too!

WHITE - hope, purity, cleanliness, peace
BLACK - sophistication, elegance, mystery, power
PINK - gentleness, friendly, kindness
RED - love, vitality, passion
ORANGE - cheerful, social, warmth, creativity
YELLOW - optimism, sunny, happiness
GREEN - refreshing, balances energy, relaxation
BLUE - serenity, peace, cool, relaxation
PURPLE - richness, royalty, elegance, spiritual
BROWN - earthy, nature

Do you already have a colour scheme in place? Or is your room a blank canvas?? – either way its all very easy! A colour wheel is a great tool to help guide you. It will give you the confidence to create colour harmony.

• Are you looking to add an accent colour to a very neutral room? Think of using a colour opposite on the colour wheel to your existing scheme. This will give you the strongest impact and a real ‘wow’ factor. For example, if you have yellow/creamy walls and flooring – choose purple lanterns, or if your scheme is currently very green, decorate with red lanterns. By selecting an ‘opposing’ colour, this will make your accent lanterns the feature of the space.

• Are you wanting a more subtle lantern decorating feature? If so, choose a colour which is already heavily featured in the room. For example, if you have a monochromatic scheme(consists of one colour in various shades and tints) choose lanterns in the same colour too. You may already have various blue shades, so adding pale blue or sapphire blue lanterns would be perfect!

• Be inspired by nature. Take a look around at all the colour and beauty of our natural surroundings. Mother nature is the greatest colour consultant of them all – she puts colours together beautifully: blues and yellows at the beach, greens and blues of the grass and sky, black and orange on a tiger, or even the 7 colours of a rainbow all together – perfect!

• Maybe you just want to add lots of colour. Then, there’s no rules – just pick all the colours you like and go for it! As you can see from the picture below, lots of different colours look great together. Especially for childrens rooms or parties, the more colour the better!

Now that you’ve chosen the colours, here’s some some hanging suggestions to create different effects.

- hang smaller lanterns in clusters (uneven numbers work best)
- use a variety of sizes at different heights
- stick to one colour but mix up the shapes/sizes/textures
- combine prints with plains in same or opposing colours
- make a string of lanterns either horizontal or vertical
- keep it simple – a single large lantern in the centre of the room

Paper lanterns can also be a fantastic temporary make-over tool, great if you are renting or just wanting a particular ‘theme’ for a short period of time. For example, Christmas, or Chinese New Year. And, they are reclyclable!! They fold flat when not in use for easy storage, so you can use them over and over again (unlike balloons)!

Lanternshop Blog - welcome, and thanks for visiting! Our passion is lanterns - and we source all types of lanterns and decorations to make your event spectacular and memorable!

This blog will be a frequent update of news, happenings, events, special offers, and the 'behind the scenes' of the lanternshop team. We hope to bring you inspiration and ideas to help you plan and decorate your weddings, themed parties, Chinese New Year celebrations, or any other special occasion! Silk and paper lanterns also make interesting and functional home and garden decorating features, and are very popular with interior designers!

Some of you already know us from dragonfly, but for those who haven't met us before, here is the team!

Its mainly an all-girl team!! There's me - Karen (an interior decorator by trade), and my two hardworking and loyal assistants Patsy and Frankie. They are shihtzu-maltese, and the sweetest little girls in the world. They help make every work day fun and interesting, and there's never a shortage of cuddles! Mr Lantern helps with the muscle power when required, and we are very thankful for that!!

We are based in Brisbane Australia, and we send lanterns all over Australia, and sometimes internationally too!

I travel to Asia frequently, mainly Vietnam and China to find the best quality silk fabrics, paper lantern designs and LED lighting systems. The next shipment is due early August, and will have some really exciting new things I found on my trip in May ..... silk and paper fans, parasols in great new colours, nylon solar lanterns, and some really nice wedding centrepiece lanterns - Can't wait. Of course, details and pictures will be on this blog the minute I've unpacked the container!! So stay tuned!

Not only do I find great things for my customers, I also got this beautiful fan for my warehouse/shop. It was hand painted (in about 5 minutes) by a very talented young man in Shanghai. It has the chinese characters for lanternshop, decorated with goldfish, lanterns and panda bears. So clever!! At the moment, my Chinese is very limited, but I can say the word for 'lantern', so I was able to convey my message of what I was wanting, what a miracle!! I'm so impressed!
